These activities can include coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting heavy objects, jumping, running or other exercises. The primary cause of SUI is pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. If we aren’t breathing properly or activating our pelvic floor muscles in the right way - it may lead to these issues.

Recognizing the Symptoms: Are You Affected by SUI?

Identifying the symptoms of SUI is essential for seeking timely medical attention. If you experience any of the following signs, it is possible that you might have stress urinary incontinence:

  • Leaking urine with exercise: jumping, running, cycling or lifting heavy weights increases the pressure on your pelvic floor. If you aren’t engaging the proper muscles, you may experience leaking with these activities.
  • Crossing your legs with coughing, laughing or sneezing: you may find yourself crossing your legs or having to crouch down to the floor to avoid leaking urine.
  • Avoiding certain activities with friends or family: often times leaking urine can lead to embarrassing moments. You avoid carrying your kids or playing on a trampoline with them because you fear leaking urine.

  • Deep core strengthening
  • Glute strengthening
  • Pelvic floor exercises that promote strengthening like kegels
  • Pelvic floor exercises that promote stretching; like happy baby or child’s pose
  • Decrease the amount of bladder irritants you’re consuming
  • Try doing a kegel before coughing or sneezing
  • Do NOT hold your breath when you’re lifting or exercising, make sure you inhale during the “easy” part of the lift and exhale during the more challenging part without bearing down
  • Do NOT push or strain while having a bowel movement

Stress Urinary Incontinence is a common condition that affects many individuals, but it should never be a cause for shame or silence. Understanding the symptoms and seeking proper medical advice are the first steps towards effectively managing SUI.
